News: Hackers use MIT computer lab for anti-sec probe
If this is "antisec", they're a waste of ammo. But here are the fingerprints I found on my server. Interesting that this should come after a discussion of Aaron Schwartz's indictment among my Facebook friends.

Background: John F. Kennedy on freedom of press and secrecy
This historic speech is not widely known but may be the single most important statement made by the late John F. Kennedy because of its importance today - in a world of secret torture dungeons and trillion dollar wars fought under a veil of secrecy that have cost us our future. FULL TEXT Audio will soon be broadcast on Radio Galesburg.

Mental Hygiene: Bucking the National Endowment for the Arts
(Print some posters - landscape mode)

Having just set up streaming internet radio, independent of our media oligarchs, I've devoted a stream to the great poet of the prairie. Who actually reads his best poems, even in his home town, especially during the government-funded BIG READ?

I would like to see Karen Finley as the featured author for the BIG READ. We could read about her sweet potato, and what she does with it. As much fun as that might be, I still prefer Sandburg. It is his time. Carl Sandburg Days starts in a few weeks. Yet we are supposed to be reading Edgar Allen Poe, because it is our assignment. And this in a town that hates its crows.Quoth the raven, nevermore.

Sandburg doesn't seem like he's dead.; He sees the same things I do. Everything is living,

Election Issues: Constitutional amendment proposed to roll back corporate election spending
50 law professors and attorneys, including seven former state attorneys general, issued a letter calling on Congress to consider a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision in Citizens United, which asserts that corporations have "freedom of speech" and should not be limited by regulations on their contributions to political campaigns. Yesterday, Jeff Clements, former assistant attorney general of Massachusetts and general counsel of Free Speech for People discussed this with Democracy Now!

Mental Hygiene: Still waiting for detention reform? - Demand Dignity, Not Detention

Deportation is planned for 30,000 Haitian residents of the US “Preserving human dignity, family unity and freedom is an essential part of this nation’s fabric.” said CCR attorney Sunita Patel. “We join our partners to say that enough is enough. The Obama administration must re-think its detention-only and enforcement-first approach. We demand a immigration policies that are fair and just instead of harsh and unfair.”
It has been more than a year since the Obama administration announced the reform of Homeland Security(DHS) and Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE). What we have is window dressing. Key officials from the Bush era remain in place, and littlle has changed.

UPDATED 12-01-2010: only one of the 2 previously linked documents is still available from DHS, the link has changed and now works.

Mental Hygiene: Apple alone can't save the Chicago Transit Authority

shiney new CTA station at North and Clybourn, thanks to Apple
For the sake of the upscale consumers who might visit their shiney new store, Apple Computer has kicked in to renovate the North and Clybourn L station. The Chicago Transit Authority now considers selling "names rights" to stations, probably as the result of this corporate investment. I used to live near there. It was always a dump, reeking of urine. People have been shot for $50 not far from those creaky stairs. Is this "renovation" really a good thing. and is it unique? Read on...

economics: Tribal Elders Reject Clean Coal Proposal
Peabody Energy, the world's largest coal company waited in the wings to see if the latest adventure in tribal territories would pan out. They already benefit from a lucrative deal that allowed them to deplete the water supply of the Hopi and Navajo for mining operations. Carbon capture would help prolong the hegemony of fossil fuel, but this time the elders have ruled against them.

economics: Chevron expert's credibility wanes in wake of US$19million judgment
A few days before the incredible greenwash attempt recently launched by Chevron, the expert witness for their multi-billion dollar trial in Ecuador was dealt a serious blow. Not once in 2 decades of work for Texaco and Chevron has John Connor found his clients to be responsible for harm to even a single person. The jury in Jefferson County, Mississippi found otherwise.
